I hope you all had a fun Halloween! Now that we are in November, my mind shifts to the holidays. Here we are again – fall family photo time! I have been busy styling families for their upcoming photo sessions and if you haven’t scheduled yours yet this year, it’s not too late! Don’t skip those family photos; there is still time! Enjoy the season!

We are officially in the downswing of summer, but there is still plenty of time to get in a summer date with your sweetie! I styled outfits for a few different summer date ideas. I made sure to include events both for day and night.

If you read the last blog post about extended family photos, you know that I recommend a simple palette of blue and white for photos, especially when they are larger groups. This is an example of taking that palette and adding in a pop of another color. This time, the trendy yellow color!

Summer is here! Which brings us to a time when families get together and family reunions are planned, so hopefully someone is capturing those memories! Whether you book a session with a photographer, grab a friend or set up a self timer, you won’t regret the family keepsake.

One of photographer partners of Allison Beauchamp Styling is the fabulous Kami Shaw Photography. I recently styled a 24 person extended family photo session she has planned for early July. I believe that was my largest group yet!

Many of the same styling guidelines work for extended family photo sessions as smaller sessions. However, there are a few things that can help everyone coordinate and relieve some stress with a bit of direction leading up to the day.

I suggest a color palette with shades of blue and white as these colors are often already in your closet and most everyone can find a shade of blue that they feel fabulous in! This can also include many shades of denim, which simplifies it as well. Unless you want to look like a 90’s Gap commercial, I would steer away from telling everyone to wear jeans and a white shirt.

You could also add in a blushy pink or coral and beige/tan, like I did for this larger group. Feel free to mix it up with different hues, patterns, styles and textures to add interest and individual style.

Often these larger group photo sessions take place outdoors, so this color palette is beautiful against the green of a field or complimenting the shades on the beach, or of course in your favorite urban areas as well.

There are other color palettes that would work too. Many times, I find my color inspiration from floral arrangements. They are a wonderful example of colors and textures that don’t match, yet work really well together.

Some would say to stick to similar intensities when it comes to the overall colors. For example, if you are going with lighter shades, try to stay on the lighter side, and vice versa for more saturated hues. This is all personal preference of course!

Usually the extended family photo includes smaller family units so when providing styling guidance, I make sure those groups look just as good apart from the larger group. I also like to consider individual style and personal preferences.

Climate is also a factor, so if needed, swap to shorts or short sleeves, or add a layer.

This season, for me, was all about adding wardrobe essentials! I thought I would share what I have loved so if you too are on the lookout for wardrobe workhorses, this may give you some ideas. See more here, or by clicking directly on the image below.

You can see by the style board above, that my personal style is pretty classic. I would say most of my wardrobe is neutral and classic, with feminine pieces and pops of color added in to keep it interesting. Lately, the pieces I needed were very much in the classic lane, but I love them!

Let’s start with the maxi dress. I did not have a white dress in my closet and felt it was a wardrobe gap I have wanted to fill for a few years. This dress is a beautiful airy cotton and is actually an antique white, which is even better for my coloring. This will be a great starting off piece to be styled in several ways.

One of the ways I will style this dress is by pairing it with the Lily Pullover sweater from Able, which happens to be the exact shade of antique white, and I love a monochromatic look with different, yet complimentary textures. This sweater is a nice quality knit that I will love and use as a wardrobe staple for years to come. It looks amazing with blue denim as well!

I knew I wanted to replace the white collared shirt that I had as it was several years old, and not the best quality fabric. The reviews on the Harris shirt were enough for me to add it to my Try-On order. It is oversized, so I ordered two sizes and ended up going with the smaller size, while still keeping the look and feel of a bit oversized; perfect for spring and summer! The fabric is a great cotton and again, this piece will have so many styling opportunities.

I also added two accessories from Able. I am loving the “fanny pack” trend, but I was looking for something more versatile and closer to my personal style. The Karla Belt Bag was just right! I love that it can be worn multiple ways, as a fanny pack or diagonal across the chest. The strap can be removed and it is a functional wallet to put inside another bag or use as a fold over clutch. The leather is beautiful.

I have been eyeing this necklace for a while and with just a bit of a hint, haha, this was my Mother’s Day gift. It is handmade in Nashville and a great length to wear with so many things.

H&M has been impressing me lately with what they have for both women and kids. I ordered several things, but only really needed the two I kept. One was the light blue collared shirt. Again, the one I had was several years old and not the best quality, so I was looking to replace it. I prefer the fabrication of the white Able shirt, but this soft blue one is light weight and will be perfect for spring and summer.

The second piece I kept from H&M was the blue v-neck tie belt dress. I actually ended up wearing this for Easter. It comes in several colors, so if you are looking for an easy dress that can be dressed up or down – this is for you!

Finally, the slip-on rain boots from Sperry were a fun and functional addition. I wore the winter version (see them here, now on sale!) all season and they were perfect to slip on and off for school drop off/pick up or a quick errand. I knew I would get just as much use as the seasons change.

There is one more piece on my wish list I was hoping to add, but haven’t quite found the right one: a classic trench.

While all of these items I recently added are very neutral and wardrobe basics, I plan on adding one or two fun and interesting pieces this summer. Most likely a colorful dress or skirt. A few I have seen while looking are:
